Opening Day at Oyster Bed Speedway
2013-05-20 -
It was opening day at the Oyster Bed Speedway and the drivers didn’t wait for the demolition derby to wreck some cars.
In the most spectacular crash in some time at the speedway Modified rookie driver Brandon Snow found himself going for the ride of his life. Travelling on the high side of the track coming out of turn two fellow driver Dylan Lennentine became loose out of the corner and made contact with Snow. The impact was great enough to send Snow’s car airborne into the wall and with his right side tires riding the top of the wall the car clipped a light pole and got launched by a nearby sign flipping the car over and coming to rest on the roof in the middle of the backstretch with the light pole falling onto the track as well. The race was immediately stopped while emergency crews raced to the scene. Thankfully Snow was able to walk away from the crash garnering a huge round of applause from the fans who were relieved to see him come out of the crash unscathed. The car on the other hand is almost a complete write-off according to crew chief and father of the driver Kenny Snow.
In the Modified division Defending champion Randy Millar opened his season with a win by making a last lap pass on Darrel Ford for the victory. In their second race of the day Ford was able to hold off Millar for the win. In the feature both drivers were unable to fend off Robbie MacEwen who claimed the feature race checkered flag followed by Millar and Ford.
As usual the Street Stock division was mostly dominated by veterans of the class. Stephen Gass was most successful out of all the drivers opening with a third place finish and a second. In the feature he battled to the front and held off advances from defending champion Nick Chaisson for the feature win. Chaisson who started his day strong in the heats with a second and a third would fade out of contention in the feature race. Mark Leclair posted a pair of heat wins.
One bright spot in the division is sophomore driver Alex Sheehan who grabbed a second place heat race finish along with a third in the feature. This will mark Sheehan’s first full year in the division after having an up and down rookie season which he did grab some wins.
The Outlaw division had Defending Champion James Doucette pick up where he left off and swept all three races with Jonathon Stewart finishing with a pair of seconds and a third in the feature.
The Mini-Stock division saw veteran driver Jeff Gallant cruise to two wins on the day with the feature going to Richie Moore.
Racing resumes Saturday June first at six.
